Synopsis

With over 60 years of operating experience and an emerging global presence, SATS is Singapore’s leading provider of gateway services and food solutions. SATS is not new to cloud computing. We have been evaluating and adopting cloud computing since 2009 when SATS was divested from Singapore Airlines Group. In this session, I would share with you our experiences, challenges, pitfalls and tips on how to adopt a cloud strategy.

About the speaker

Lee Siew Kit graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (First Class) degree. He joined Singapore Airlines Management Services Department in 1992 as an analyst programmer. In his 15 years with SIA, he took on different roles, such as systems analyst, project manager, program manager, and team manager.

Siew Kit joined SATS, which was part of the SIA Group, in 2006 as Manager, IT Services. As IT Head of SATS, he was responsible for managing the company’s 5 years’ IT Master Plan, SATS Application Architecture Blueprint and Standards, Portfolio of SATS IT Projects, and the many vendors engaged to provide outsourced services such as Data Center, End User Computing, SAP Hosting and Maintenance, and non-SAP Application Maintenance. When SATS acquired Singapore Food Industries (SFI) in 2009 and expanded operations in the Region through acquisition and joint ventures, his scope of coverage extended to integrating SFI and the other subsidiaries into the SATS Group infrastructure. In Sep 2009, SATS was divested from the SIA Group. As part of the divestiture, SATS has to source for its own Data Center, EUC and Application Maintenance service providers as SATS can no longer leverage on the same infrastructure and service provider as SIA. We have completed migration to the new SingTel Data Center as well as implementing our own SAP system. Siew Kit was promoted to the current position of Vice President IT Services in Jul 12. His scope of work now includes leading the SATS Group Innovation and Productivity initiative. He has vast experiences architecting and implementing IT solutions to support aviation ground handling and food businesses, as well as non-aviation food businesses.

Abstract

Centuries ago, the biggest problems of the day were solved with prize competitions: measuring longitude at sea by the Royal Navy in 1714; preserving food by the French government in the early 1800s; air travel by the Schneider prize in 1911.

In the 20th century, as enterprises grew and multi-national corporations boasted bigger budgets than the GDPs of small countries, internal Research & Development departments became built-in (i.e., internal, in-house) problem solvers.

Now, as the Internet continues to empower and connect individuals around the world, and as economic crises restrict public and private budgets, prize competitions and crowdsourcing are making a strong comeback.

Simon Schneider is General Manager, Grand Challenges and Head of EMEA at InnoCentive. He co-founded OmniCompete, a leading company focused on Grand Challenges, which was acquired by InnoCentive in January 2012. Under Simon’s leadership, OmniCompete awarded over $2.9 million in prizes, which multiplied into $124 million in impact by prize finalists. Before completing his MBA at London Business School, Simon worked as a security consultant for IBM in New York, where he managed multi-million dollar technology projects in video surveillance, biometrics, and business continuity. Prior to working at IBM, Simon founded and led two venture-backed technology start-ups in Germany and the US. Simon sits on innovation advising committees for departments of the German and UK governments, and he also invented a patent that has been licensed to IBM. Simon contributes regularly to open innovation discussions in the media (e.g., New Scientist) and speaks regularly at conferences in Washington, London, and Brussels.
